Tokyo Smoke was founded in 2014 by Aaron Smith and Jaren Wilkins. The company officially launched its online store in October of that year. In November of 2017, Tokyo Smoke announced that it had entered into a joint venture agreement with Canopy Growth Corporation (TSX:WEED) to jointly develop and operate a cannabis retail platform in Alberta.
